Reported by David Lloyd Clubs, most office workers spend 90% of their working day sitting down. To fight the work culture’s sitting disease, David Lloyd Clubs has launched Run For Your Bun, the pop-up exercise cafe, for 3 days (January 11th – 13th) in London. The cafe will only accept a 10 minute HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) session as payment for a delicious and healthy lunch- minutes on a rowing machine, spin bike and treadmill equates to “dollars” and squats, sit-ups and lunges as “change.”

Elaine Denton, health and fitness expert from David Lloyd Clubs explained to Mirror, “Being active at work and moving around more is really important… Our lifestyles are becoming increasingly sedentary and we want people to recognize that a nutritious, balanced diet and a healthy amount of exercise go hand-in-hand when it comes to leading a healthy lifestyle.”

There are countless studies and statistics that have led to the conclusion that a sedentary lifestyle contributes to anxiety, depression, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other major health issues. According to The Washington Post, the average office person sits 10 hours a day responding to emails, filling out paperwork, writing proposals, making phone calls and eating lunch. Many people go from their office chairs to living room chairs to the couch with Netflix. Without realizing it, we become stuck in this unhealthy perpetuating cycle of stress from sitting too much. Reported by Distractify, an office worker spends 5 years sitting at a desk and 2 years sitting in work meetings. The average American lifespan is 78.6 years. That’s a whole lot of sitting that is jeopardizing your chances at living a longer life. Some researchers have proposed the alarming statement that sitting is the ‘silent killer’ and may be worse for our health than smoking.
