Like it or not, we’re in a dangerous pandemic. That means if we want to open up our states and live in a safe, somewhat normal way, we need to follow the medical experts’ advice. Simply put, we’ve got to wear masks. It’s about doing the right thing, which helps protect you and other people.

But some individuals refuse to wear a mask. They think it infringes on their freedom. And sometimes, those people go a bit too far when fighting against mask regulations.

Costco shopper

Grocery stores are often crowded with people you don’t know. So, they’re a perfect example of where people should wear masks. But one man who went to Costco didn’t feel he had to.

Making a scene

It’s not just that this man refused to wear a mask. He also got his phone out and started filming the minute Tison, the Costco employee, told him he needed to put a mask on. It’s obvious the customer’s upset.

His side of the story

Why was this customer so angry? Well, because as he puts it, “I woke up in a free country.” He also claimed, “I’m not a sheep.” Apparently, wearing a mask would take his freedom away from him.

A funny response

At the beginning of the video, Tison had something to say to the camera. He looked directly at it and said, “Hi everyone! I work for Costco and I’m asking this member to put on a mask because that is our company policy.”

Shared on the internet

Somehow, this customer thought the internet would take his side. So, he posted the video to the “Public Freakout” Reddit. But what happened next wasn’t quite what he expected.

It went viral

He wanted attention and he got it. The video went viral right away. Even though he deleted it only a short time after posting it online, it was still widely shared across the web.

The unexpected

It shouldn’t surprise you that the response the man received wasn’t good. People who viewed the video overwhelmingly sided with the employee. They had a lot to say to back Tison up.

Grocery store workers have it bad enough

Reddit user u/Shutinneedout felt bad for the Costco employee and what he was going through. They said, “I feel so awful for employees that are having to deal with these assholes right now. In addition to all the assholes, they usually deal with.”

A good point

Reddit user u/SheiBataa also posted a comment. They stated, “Mate, retail workers of all kinds are dealing with people who arent being as careful as they should be with all of this […]. [sic]

But they had more to say. “The employee was given instructions to keep himself and the rest of his team safer, he is following those instructions, you are not abiding rules that were laid out. He ain’t in the wrong here, the guy complaining about emergency restrictions and not abiding them on the other hand…”

Just be respectful

Nobody’s enjoying what’s happening in the world right now. But we can make things easier. We can start by thinking of others when we leave the house or visit a grocery store by simply remembering to put on a mask. It’s not that hard.
