One day, the 80-year-old Eleanor Baker from Oxford, Alabama decided to go dine at Brad’s Bar-B-Que restaurant along with her dog.
After she walked into the building, she was closely followed by three men who were also in for some dinner.
Right away, the three men noticed this elderly woman with her dog and immediately figured that they should probably do something.
What happened next was very surprising, and probably not what most would expect.
In fact, it was a heartwarming gesture by the three young men who entered the restaurant shortly after Eleanor did, and the security camera managed to capture most of it on tape for all of us to see.
Eleanor’s husband recently passed away, and the woman was feeling a bit down.
Although she does have a rather large family, most of her relatives actually live outside of town, so she doesn’t really have someone to take to dinner with. Luckily, she does still have her loyal four-footer friend to keep her company, her adorable dog Rufus.
As such, Eleanor asked for a table for one and some room for her dog, but the widow didn’t have to eat alone for too long.
Eleanor herself believes that she didn’t go to the Bar-B-Que restaurant by accident.
“It was a God thing. I think God sent me there [as an example that] people care about other people and how important it is.”
The three men had already noticed her, but one of them thought that she must be feeling lonely in the restaurant and wanted to do something about it.
Jamario Howard was the one that had the courage to approach the woman, and he had a very simple question for her. He simply asked her if she wanted to have some company and if they could all have dinner together.
“He just came up and he said ‘I saw you sitting over here alone’ and he said ‘do you mind having some company?’” the woman recalls in an interview with CBS News.
Eleanor was shocked by the kind question and said that he and his friends were most definitely welcome to join her at her table.
All of this occurred before the pandemic, so social distancing wasn’t a thing yet.
She was flattered and didn’t think that someone would even try to help her feel less lonely, let alone three complete strangers.
The three men also later explained that they purely wanted to make this woman feel less lonely while at dinner and it was just an altruistic act, but it didn’t take long before they actually started having fun together with just the four of them.
“I personally thought, like, you know, it’s all right to be kind to people, ’cause this woman, she told me that the next day would’ve been their 60th anniversary. So I figured, you know, maybe it was a good thing, that we, maybe she needed somebody right now,” Jamario said to NBC12.
There was an instant connection between the group of friends and Eleanor, something that was really strong and present.
By the end of the night, the three young men even felt that they were kind of her new grandchildren.
Jamario, the one who approached the woman, said that he’s always wanted to change the world even when he was very young.
The kind man believes that truly anyone can make a difference just by being kind and generous – it doesn’t matter how famous you are or how much money you have.
If there were more people like him, the world would truly be a better and happier place.
“I’m not rich. I’m not famous. And I’m not very smart either, so I can’t be president. But we can show the world it’s alright to be kind,” Jamario concluded. “And then, before long, maybe the world will be a much better place.”
It’s stories like these that truly show how little and small acts of kindness can make a huge difference. Always being kind really goes a very long way, you never know how much you can brighten up someone’s day just by showing your best side.
